If This Sounds Familiar...

You've put in the practice time and learned the basic rudiments, but something feels missing.

Reading Challenges

  • You know individual rudiments but struggle to read them fluently in musical contexts
  • Sheet music can feel overwhelming during actual performance
  • Sometimes you find yourself guessing at rhythms rather than truly understanding the patterns

Musical Application

  • Your rudiments are technically correct but don't always sound musical
  • It's hard to connect what you practice to real playing situations effectively
  • Practice sessions sometimes feel unfocused or repetitive without clear direction

Learning Path

  • You've been working at this level for a while without a clear sense of progression
  • Online tutorials are helpful but don't seem to connect into a bigger picture
  • You wonder if there's a more systematic way to develop these skills

The Reality:

Many dedicated drummers experience exactly this. The missing piece is often structure. A comprehensive, step-by-step approach that builds skills systematically makes the difference between isolated practice and real musical development.

Without the right structure, even dedicated practice can leave you feeling stuck in the same place. This frustration drove one teacher to spend 30 years perfecting a different approach.

About
Chuck Burrows

Chuck Burrows - Legendary drum instructor at Carleton University for 30 years
"Chuck taught drummers how to think and practice effectively. His focus was always on helping students achieve real mastery."
— Jeff Asselin

Chuck Burrows spent over 30 years developing and refining his approach to rudimental drumming at Carleton University. What made Chuck special was his systematic method. Every lesson built naturally on the previous one, creating a clear path from beginner concepts to advanced musicianship.

Many of Chuck's students went on to teach at places like Berklee and percussion programs around the world. They carried his methodical approach with them, spreading his influence far beyond his own classroom.

Chuck focused on building a complete learning system rather than just teaching individual techniques. His approach developed technique, reading, and musicality together in a logical sequence. Each concept had a clear purpose in the larger journey of learning.

Chuck cared most about effectiveness. He focused on creating a method that would genuinely help committed students develop professional-level skills, regardless of where they started.

The Inheritance Moment

When Chuck passed unexpectedly in 2019, he left me something extraordinary in his will. I inherited the rights to his complete educational archive. Twelve unpublished books. Decades of refined methodology. A lifetime of teaching wisdom that had never been shared publicly.

I realized I had inherited a responsibility along with those books. Chuck's approach could help so many more drummers if I could share it in a way that honored his teaching while making it accessible to today's students.

Jeff has organized, edited, and completed a lifetime's work by a unique and early-departed champion of the drums. I don't know a more qualified steward of this material than Jeff Asselin. The book starts slowly and develops into quite challenging material. Bravo to Jeff and his editor, Matt Savage, for undertaking this endeavor. Well done! Highly recommended!

The rudimental, solo, and duet book by Chuck Burrows was—and is—one of the greatest resources for drummers out there. The book will give you a deep and thorough understanding of rudimental drumming, with a focus on articulation, dynamics, advanced counting, coordination, and phrasing (all at the same time). To put it simply, this book will change your drumming forever.

Chuck's method gave me the reading skills and technical control that got me into Berklee. More importantly, it taught me how to practice effectively. I still use those practice principles every day as a professional.

Common Questions

Many books provide exercises but not the context for how to practice them effectively. Chuck's approach includes the methodology. It shows you how to approach each piece systematically, with video demonstrations of proper technique and musicality.

YouTube offers great individual lessons, but Chuck's method provides a complete sequence where each concept builds on the previous one. Having a structured path can help you progress more systematically than jumping between different approaches.

Chuck designed this to work for different skill levels. Beginners can build solid fundamentals from the start, while more experienced players often find areas they can strengthen. The progressive structure lets you work at your own pace.

Chuck's approach emphasizes focused, structured practice. Even shorter practice sessions can be effective when you know exactly what to work on and how to approach it. The videos help you use your time efficiently.

The rudimental foundation you'll build transfers to all percussion and drum set playing. These skills improve your coordination, reading, and musical expression across every drumming situation.

Chuck Burrows taught at Carleton University for over 30 years, developing a systematic approach that produced students who now teach at major conservatories worldwide, including Berklee. His method has been proven effective with hundreds of students over three decades.
